Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 electricians?
The key thing to note is that Level 1 and Level 2 ASPs are both qualified electricians, they just specify in different fields. The main differences include the type of electrical systems they can operate on and where they can work.
A Level 2 electrician is qualified to carry out installations, repairs and maintenance on service lines that run between a property and the electrical supply network, like overhead cables. A Level 1 electrician, on the other hand, generally deals with circuitry, faulty wiring problems and switches but can perform underground and overhead construction work to distribute the electrical network close to the roadway.
Can I fix an electrical problem myself?
We don't recommend that you attempt to fix an electrical problem or disconnect the electrical services between your property and service line by yourself, no matter how simple it may seem. Electricity is dangerous, and there could be serious consequences if you do a job wrong. Furthermore, aside from physical harm, if an electrical repair is carried out incorrectly, it could result in a lot of damage being done to your home and the system you are trying to fix.
What's more, you're likely going to end up paying out more than you would have if you'd hired an electrician in the first place. For these reasons, it's better to hire a licensed electrician to deal with any issues safely.
What services does a level 2 electrician provide?
There are a few electrical tasks that only a level 2 electrician is licensed to carry out, including:
- Disconnecting a building from the electrical network
- Installing or repairing underground service lines
- Installing or repairing overhead service lines
- Installing and activating any electricity meters in your building
When do I need the services of a Level 2 electrician?
If you need any of the following work done, you must contact a Level 2 electrician:
- Installation of VIR cables
- Repair of UV-damaged cables
- Installation of a temporary power supply
- Installation of a power supply to a new home or business
- Installation of private power poles
- Consumer mains upgrades, installations or repairs
- Replacement of an electrical system
- Repairing point of attachment defects
- Upgrading to a 2- or 3-phase electrical system
- Electrical safety inspections
